چکیده

6. It has been demonstrated that control over volume history reduces the intrasubject variability of flow measurements by RCT [6]. It is possible that the breath-stacking technique reduced the scatter of the flow data. This remains unclear because coefficients of variation of repeated measurements are not reported. All these factors allow forced expiratory flows to differ among different manoeuvres even when wave speed (flow-limitation) conditions are achieved by each technique, and could explain the reported flow differences. Unfortunately, this study cannot resolve the ongoing flowlimitation debate in RCT, but demonstrates that standardization of forced expiratory manoeuvres is essential for flow comparison; a fact well-known in adult lung function laboratories.

Maximal expiratory flows generated by rapid chest compression following end-inspiratory occlusion or expiratory clamping in young children.

Partial forced expiratory flow-volume curves obtained by the rapid chest compression technique are being widely used to assess pulmonary function in infants and young children. The aim of this study is to assess whether in this age group flow limitation is achieved with the partial forced expiratory flow-volume curve with rapid chest compression. In eight infants and young children sedated with...

Differences in airway wall compliance as a possible mechanism for wheezing disorders in infants.

High-frequency input impedance measurements (Z(f)) provide useful noninvasive information on airway geometry and especially airway wall mechanics in the canine and human adult respiratory system. Using the high-speed interrupter technique (HIT), we have shown that it is possible to measure high-frequency Z(f) in infants up to 900 Hz, including antiresonant phenomena which are known to be relate...

Determinants of expiratory airflow in patients with chronic airways obstruction.

This paper examines the relationship between the intrathoracic and bronchial pressures and the flow time course during forceful expiration in patients with severe chronic airways obstruction and tracheobronchial collapse. After an initial peak flow, the flow rate (V) of forceful expirations usually fitted the patient's maximum expiratory flow volume (MEFV) curve. The great reduction in flow aft...

Novel method for measuring effects of gas compression on expiratory flow.

During forced vital capacity maneuvers in subjects with expiratory flow limitation, lung volume decreases during expiration both by air flowing out of the lung (i.e., exhaled volume) and by compression of gas within the thorax. As a result, a flow-volume loop generated by using exhaled volume is not representative of the actual flow-volume relationship. We present a novel method to take into ac...

High-frequency assisted airway clearance.

High-frequency airway clearance assist devices generate either positive or negative transrespiratory pressure excursions to produce high-frequency, small-volume oscillations in the airways. Intrapulmonary percussive ventilation creates a positive transrespiratory pressure by injecting short, rapid inspiratory flow pulses into the airway opening and relies on chest wall elastic recoil for passiv...
